Are You Leading a Learning Organization….Team….or Family ?

The idea of teaching others and then having them eventually take on the role of teacher is perhaps one of the most effective ways to insure you have a learning organization. Until I taught someone else, and listened to their questions and concerns, I didn’t really have mastery over the knowledge or technique. Hear are the basic 5 steps of reproducing yourself and insuring you support a learning organization (family or team)….

  1. I do it (demonstration)  Leadership by example.
  2. we do it together (shadowing) Teamwork and Collaboration.
  3. you do it, I am with you (mentoring) Lead by delegating.
  4. you do it……(learn by your own mistakes) Kaisen and incremental improvement.
  5. you do it and someone is with you (“teaching and learning are the same”, from the Course in Miracles) The line between teacher and student or learner is blurred.

I have studied the “Course in Miracles”, I substitute in my mind different words at times to make it more “secular” as I do not consider myself strongly religious and like to keep this separate in my life so that learning is more fluid and open. In our Children as Teachers Program (“C.A.T.S.) the kids teach their parents how to use harnesses, ropes and carabiners. This strengthens relationships both in the work world as well as at home in the family.

Five Levels of Leadership

John Maxwell talks about 5 levels of leadership. Where does your “authority” as a leader come from?

Maxwell5LevelsLeadership

Your title or position?  Your ability to connect with others? Or from your ability to solve problems, produce results and build momentum? From your ability to form a learning organization (Senge), developing people and form effective teams who lead and perform well like you? Or from the deep respect that you have earned by performing on all these levels for a long period of time. By “modeling the way” (Kouzes and Posner) for others?

To find out where you are….what level of leader you are…..you need to take some time. Get quiet. If you know meditation or are practicing a form of mindfulness then get settled and calm. Make a list of the people you work with and ask which level of leadership you are at with each person. As John says, you will be at a different level with different people. Then make an action plan for each person to raise your level with each of them. More info go here.

Kids Special: Semana Santa/Easter Week

Kids are out of school and families are on vacation. Come and climb with us !!!! Receive 10% off your meal at the Casa del Sendero restaurant.

April 3rd, 4th and 5th (and the next weekend too: April 10,11,12) the high climbing wall at Santa Fe Learnning Centers is open extended hours 11am to 4pm.  Groups of just 3 or more can call for their own session during the 2 week vacation ($ 100 pesos /perso; $150/two; $400 for families).

This is a special opportunity to climb, learn and love. Love for time outside in nature, love for your family and love for challenging yourself. Anyone can climb, from 9 to 90. Ask about “Hang Time”, a special activity to help younger climbers (8 and under) get used to hanging, swinging and defying gravity as they get accustom to being off the ground.

Buddies Not Bullys Program

Bullying prevention behaviors that increase empathy and simple tricks like “mentor buddies”  are practiced and set up through school systems which are the “epicenter” of prevention strategies. (see our special “Buddies not Bullys” program).

Family systems and wholistic solution focused strategies are discussed and implementation plans are made. After a brief review of the history and meaning of bullying behaviors, this prevention program moves into experiential activities, role plays and team building which prevent bullying behaviors without every mentioning the word “Bully”.

We provide a fun experiential mix of activities that can include challenge course climbing, parenting and school community building that eliminate the need in the future for prevention per se.

Our model is based on these two resources that you can access and implement in your community(Eyes on Bullying and International Bullying Prevention. But if you want help making the positive behaviors “stick” and with implementation of the strategies that research shows work, then contact us for a program.

Saint Valentine’s Day

In Mexico it is also called Dia del Amor y de la Amistad. I like the addition of “friendship” which expands the idea of celebrating those we love to include our friends. Together with Thanksgiving it is one of the great holidays of the year.

Not too many companies list “loving” as a core competency for their leaders. Perhaps a mistake…? Check out this Forbes article called “Let Love Inspire Your Leadership“.  At Santa Fe Learning Centers we facilitate with love. More on our Couples Program here.
