C.A.T.S. Children as Teachers

Children as Teachers is a parent-child program that puts the kids in a position of knowledge and power. This boosts self esteem and creates new opportunities for parent-child interactions. How do we set the stage for this ?

We start with a mini-workshop for parents only. Our trained parenting facilitators will give some helpful suggestions to parents and role play the use of some effective tools that improve parent-child relationships.

Meanwhile, the kids are being trained in how to use the challenge course equipment including ropes, harnesses, caribiners, climbing structures and belay techniques. After a short session they know more and can do more than their parents. This gives them power and a sense of accomplishment. Most young people are not valued for what they know and are often considered “sponges” to whom we adults have to teach by “dispensing” knowledge. What does it feel like to flip that process around?

Parents are instructed to “slow down”, let go of always being the mature adult, let go of always being the teacher and let their child show them how to put on the harnesses, how to belay and how to clip into a rope and climb. Self esteem soars as the kids now know how valuable they can be.
